Alex Tzavaras

Gallery & Artist Biography

Alex Tzavaras (b. 1975) is a contemporary portrait painter working in oils and charcoal. He works exclusively from life using an Alla Prima Technique to paint as truthfully and directly as possible.

Tzavaras attended Central St. Martins and Morley College before beginning a more formal artistic training at the Lavender Hill Studios, an atelier in London set up to teach traditional figurative drawing and painting. There Tzavaras was instructed by the school’s founders; artists Nick Bashall, Scott Pohlschmidt and Ann Witheridge. In 2007 he was awarded a scholarship and became the first student to be asked to teach at the school.

Having completed intensive five-year full-time training, Tzavaras became a full-time professional portrait artist in Summer 2009, staging his first solo exhibition months later at Adam Street Gallery in London. He is now based out of his studio in Dulwich, London, where he produces commissioned portraits as well as an ongoing series of works for gallery exhibitions.
